All You Need to Know: Buying a Bed

Partager:

We don’t want to sound like an infomercial, but a good night’s sleep can be hard to find. The search for a new mattress can be a daunting task. This isn’t a purchase to take lightly, mattresses often have a high ticket price and the right bed makes a huge difference in your nightly sleep. Often manufacturers offer slightly different beds at each retailer making it hard to comparison shop, so use this handy guide courtesy of Hazelview Properties before purchasing a new mattress in Hamilton.

  • Test it out: Don’t be afraid to get up on the bed to see how it feels. Test the comfort by stretching out on your back and of course try out your favourite sleeping position. Don’t be embarrassed to really spend some time on the mattress…just don’t start snoring!
  • 30-day trial period: Don’t buy a bed without this guarantee. Most beds will take approximately a month to break in. It’s also important to give your body the time needed to adjust to the new bed.
  • Hear the reviews: Talk to friends and family about their beds. First person recommendations are great but keep in mind how their preferences differ from yours (soft vs. firm for example).
  • Never pay full price:  Keep your eyes out for sales, avoid paying full price for a mattress and be ready to negotiate. Most stores and associates are somewhat flexible on pricing.
  • Treat a backache: Opt for a firm mattress to treat lower back pain. When checking the mattress in store, ensure that it keeps your shoulders, neck and spine in alignment.
  • Remember the box spring: A good mattress should be matched with a box spring. This will assist in maintaining the structural integrity of your bedroom investment.
  • 10-year maximum:  Warranties over ten years are useless, so don’t pay more for a bed because it has a warranty over a decade. A bed has a life span of just less than ten years. Also keep in mind that warranties can be an added cost on a bed and can cost extra should you need to exchange the item.
  • Do your research:  As with most big purchases, it’s best practice to visit a brand’s website before you head to the store.  Come prepped with price points, coil counts and the specs of the mattress you want to see. Knowledge is power!
