Classic Canadian foods you have to try, and where to find them

Partager:

Anyone who says there’s no such thing as Canadian Cuisine hasn’t eaten at these places! Hazelview Properties wants to share some classic Canadian foods you have to try, and where to find them across this great land!

Edmonton: Bannock at Native Delights

Native Delights Aboriginal Cuisine likes to put its own spin on the traditional Native Canadian bread known as Bannock. Their bannock is baked fresh daily and is featured in pretty much everything they serve – from tasty bannock burgers, to hot dogs and tacos, and their signature Native Delights Salad ($7.79). Find out where this fantastic food truck is serving up its specialities, here.

Calgary: Ginger Beef at the Silver Inn

The Silver Inn (2702 Centre Street North, Calgary) has a reputation for serving some of the best Peking-style Chinese food since 1975. Back in the day, when Chinese food was a new thing in Calgary, the Crispy Ginger Beef from the Silver Inn was legendary. Sadly, it no longer appears on their menu, but we found the recipe so you can make it at home! You can still enjoy Ginger Beef at Calgary restaurants that specialize in the dish including Ginger Beef Bistro, Ginger Beef Peking House, and Ginger Beef Express.

Saskatoon: Saskatoon Berry Baked Goods at The Berry Barn

To feel like a full-fledged Saskatooner, you’ve got to try the Saskatoon Berry treats at The Berry Barn. This farm store (at 830 Valley Road, Saskatoon) features an on-site bakery that serves up an array of fresh-baked treats like Saskatoon Berry Jelly Rolls, Muffins and even Saskatoon Berry Cannolis!

Winnipeg: Bannock Pizza at Feast

Feast Cafe Bistro is the place to go in Winnipeg for a traditional twist on a classic Canadian dish. You have to try their Bannock crust pizza! It’s available with red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, smoked bacon and Manitoba grass-fed bison sausage ($10.95), OR white sauce with roasted butternut squash, mozzarella, cheddar, pine nuts, green onion and chipotle sour cream drizzle ($9.25).

Toronto: Peameal Bacon sandwich at Carousel Bakery

Historic St Lawrence Market (93 Front St East) in Toronto is a food lover’s paradise. There’s a lot to taste here. Check out the incredible Peameal Bacon Sandwich from the Carousel Bakery stand. This world-famous sandwich has inspired Celebrity Chefs Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay to come back for more!

Ottawa: Beaver Tails at BeaverTails Byward Market

Pam and Grant Hooker began serving the classic deep fried Canadian pastries known as Beaver Tails back in 1978 at the Killaloe Fair, west of Ottawa. Today, the famous tradition continues at the equally famous ByWard Market (69 George St, Ottawa).

Montreal: Montreal-style bagels at St Viateur Bagel

There is nothing like a fresh, Montréal bagel from St Viateur Bagel (263 rue St Viateur). They’ve made bagels the same way since 1957. Their bagels are hand rolled and boiled in honey water, then cooked in a wood-fired oven. They are slightly sweet and chewy when compared to the NYC variety. These bagels are delicious enough to be eaten plain, right out of the oven.

Halifax: Lobster Roll at Fredie’s Fantastic Fishhouse

Lobster lovers know a good lobster roll when they taste it. Fredie’s Fantastic Fishhouse (8 Oland Cres, Halifax) makes the lobster rolls of your dreams! Their rolls are homemade and  loaded with luscious chunks of fresh lobster, just the right amount of dressing, and are not full of celery or fillers. Order your roll with chips for just $18.99.
