Overview

The David Dunlap Observatory is a large astronomical observatory site in Richmond Hill on a 198-acre estate featuring Canada’s largest optical telescope. Constructed in the 1930’s, the Observatory is a popular spot for telescope observing, tours, lectures and a number of local events. The David Dunlap Observatory is also home to a wide range of public viewing nights and educational programs. This unique institution has attracted support and praise from astronomers and observatories around the world.

Regular Events

The David Dunlap Observatory offers a regular schedule of school trips, public viewing nights and teacher training workshops. Class trips to the DDO provide curriculum-specific educational opportunities for both elementary and high school students. Kids can learn everything from space weather to the physics of space. Public viewing nights consist of weekly programs that teach people of all ages about astronomy, along with giving the general public updates about the advances in astronomy and space science. Finally, the DDO delivers a number of workshops to Ontario science teachers to equip them with the current knowledge, skills and experience they need to effectively teach astronomy and space science topics.

Future Events

Star Talk

Star Talk nights offer amazing talks by field experts on astronomy, space science and sometimes, science fiction. During Star Talks you’ll also be able to check out the night sky through a variety of telescopes set up on the lawn (weather permitting). During the winter months or rainy days guests can check out the virtual night sky in the observatory’s new Skylab.

Family Nights

Family Nights provide a great opportunity and introduction to the night sky for younger guests. Families can look through telescopes, make space crafts and visit the Skylab. Be sure to follow the David Dunlap Observatory on Facebook for an updated schedule of events including wintertime Family Nights.

Enjoy a fun and educational outing only minutes from Hazelview’s Richmond Hill Community. The David Dunlap Observatory is a great place for people of all ages to expand their learning of astronomy, space science and the great unknown.
