This year, International Women's Day takes place on Monday, March 8th, 2021. The theme of this year is #ChooseToChallenge. We can all challenge the status quo by choosing to call out gender bias, taking action for equality, and celebrating women's achievements. To mark the occasion, we are celebrating these top 5 women entrepreneurs in the real estate industry.
Sadie Moranis
Sadie Moranis was a 37-year old homemaker when she started her career in real estate. In 1977, she became the first woman in Toronto to found her own real estate company. Moranis wanted to prove that when equal opportunities are available, a woman can accomplish as much as a man. In 1981, Moranis became the first woman president in the 60-year history of the Toronto Real Estate Board.
Danny Klempfner
In 1996, Danny Klempfner became the Founding President of the first-ever Canadian chapter of the CREW Network (Commercial Real Estate Women) – a real estate professional organization that focuses solely on women. She collaborated with Anne Morash, Francine Baker Sigal, and Virginia Beauchamp to help launch Toronto CREW. Toronto CREW members are key decision-makers for major corporations and represent almost all of the disciplines in commercial real estate. The goal of the network is to advance women globally in the industry. The chapter has over 200 members.
Tamara Barker Watson
Nova Scotia-based Whitestone Developments was founded by Tamara Barker Watson over 20 years ago. Watson has served as the company's CEO ever since – building Whitestone into one of Canada's most well-regarded and greenest developers with a focus on environmental efficiency.
Taya Cook and Sherry Larjani
Taya Cook, Director of Development at Urban Capital, and Sherry Larjani, Managing Partner at Spotlight Development, lead Canada's first all-women residential development team with Reina – a condo development in the GTA. All aspects of the project are led by a talented all-female-team of industry professionals. The concept was born when Cook read an article in Toronto Life that listed the top 20 developers in Toronto – they were all men.
Natalie Voland
For over 20 years, Natalie Voland has been transforming the heritage real estate space through Montréal-based GI Quo Vadis where she serves as president and founder. Voland prioritizes heritage conservation with a focus on uniting communities and making sure projects hit 3 targets: people, planet and profit. Voland was named as a finalist for the 2019 RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards for the TELUS Trailblazer Award.
