Try classic Canadian comfort food in Ottawa

Partager:

Enjoy some classic Canadian dishes this winter with the following places to indulge in Beaver Tails, poutine, tourtiere and maple syrup. Hazelview’s Ottawa Communities are located in some of the city’s most vibrant areas including the scenic Brittania area, Sandy Hill neighbourhood and the bustling Byward Market.

Beaver Tails

Beaver Tails are considered to be one of Canada’s national treasures. These delicious and addictive whole-wheat pastries are hand-stretched, float cooked and served with melted butter, along with your choice of sweet delectable flavours. Whether you are a classic cinnamon sugar lover or like to go all out with Nutella and Oreo cookie crumbles, there is a customizable Beaver Tail for everyone. Enjoy a delicious Beaver Tail when the craving strikes at their Byward Market location, only a four-minute walk from Hazelview’s 135 York Street Community.

Poutine

Canada is known worldwide for our love of poutine. The combination of golden french fries, fresh gravy and squeaky cheese curds is enough to make your heart melt this winter. There are a number of well-known poutine joints throughout the city including:

  • Sasha’s Chip Wagon
  • The Standard
  • The Smoque Shack
  • Elgin Street Diner
  • Oz Kafe

Elgin Street Diner is a five-minute walk from Hazelview’s 222 Maclaren Street Community and offers classic ‘shoe-string’ fries with thick gravy and the freshest cheese curds around.

Tourtiere

Tourtiere is classic Canadian comfort food. Tourtiere is a savoury mincemeat pie with dashes of flavourful cinnamon and cloves. It is rooted in both French and English culture, with Ottawa boasting some of the best tourtiere in Canada. The Red Apron is a 20-minute transit ride from Hazelview Properties’ 146 Stewart Street Community and features a variety of delicious and handmade tourtiere options. Enjoy ingredients such as Ontario Berkshire Pork and Fitzroy Beef, along with spices such as thyme, sage, onions, garlic, clove and cinnamon. The crust is made from scratch, along with a tasty house-made ketchup.

Maple Syrup

Last but certainly not least is Maple Syrup. This Canadian staple is delicious on everything from pancakes to ice cream and even on bacon or in salad dressings. There are a number of market stalls at the Byward Market which offer containers filled with maple syrup, along with a variety of maple syrup candies and treats.

Get your fill of Canadian food classics such as Beaver Tails, poutine, tourtiere and maple syrup all within close distance of Hazelview’s Ottawa apartments.
