DIY Living Room Upgrades On A Budget

Share:

Giving your living room a makeover doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. Hazelview Properties has some great tips for how you can upgrade your living room on a budget.

Update your couch cushions

New cushions will give your living room an instant makeover. This is a simple and inexpensive way to switch things up. Depending on the look you're going for, choose from different colours, patterns and textures. For a fresh and sophisticated look, try pairing navy blues with different shades of grey or geometric patterns and textured cushions for a more eclectic and chic vibe. Check out Ikea or Structube for some great options!

Create a gallery wall

Creating a gallery wall is another fantastic way to upgrade your living room. There are so many ways to do it. You can make a mini gallery wall and just put up a handful of pictures, or dedicate an entire wall to your favourite art. Before you put anything up, make sure to figure out the layout. Place your artwork on the floor and arrange everything in the order you want. Are you going to have a centerpiece? How much space do you want between each piece? Once you have this figured out, it’s time to hang everything up!

Add lots of greenery with house plants

When in doubt, add plants! Not only can they lift your mood, but they make beautiful decor and they don’t have to be expensive. A majesty palm or a yucca tree look great in a corner because they are often very big. You can also add smaller plants on shelves and stands including succulents, cacti and ivy.

Paint your furniture

If you’re tempted to replace your furniture, think again. Instead of getting rid of your old desks and dressers why not paint them to make them look brand new? You can do the same for mirror frames, shelves and pretty much anything else. Just make sure to clean and sand your furniture beforehand to create an even surface. This will help the paint stay on longer and look better. Latex or oil-based paint works best in most cases, but if you’re going for the distressed look, the best option is water-based paint.

Invest in a new rug

Since rugs take up a lot of space, they are often seen as a centerpiece in your living room. Changing your rug might just be the mini makeover you’ve been looking for. Whether you’re looking to add a splash of colour or change the pattern, you can do so very easily. Pick a vibrant colour with interesting patterns to make your rug really stand out. This is great if you want it to be the focal point of the room. Alternatively you can pick a colour that blends in with your couch or other elements to make the space feel more cohesive.  Another option is to choose a rug in a different shape or one with a lot of texture. This will make your space feel more cozy and warm!
