Earth-friendly ways to warm or cool down your Halifax apartment

Share:

Although spring has sprung, we’re all familiar with how your Halifax Apartment can be affected by Canada’s temperamental weather. One day you may want to crank the heat, the next you’ll want to escape your sweltering apartment for the balmy sunny weather outside. No matter the weather, Hazelview Communities has some tips to heat or cool your apartment while keeping tabs on your environmental impact and your budget.

For cooler days:

Before contacting the management office or plugging in your space heater, layers can offer an easy solution for chillier spring days:

  • Use functional design items like bold coloured or patterned area rugs. Cover bare floors or even layer on carpeting to create a cozy feel for your feet and keep you feeling warmer.
  • Close drapes or blinds on cooler days or evenings. The added layer will keep the heat inside where it belongs.
  • Pull a Mr. Rogers and keep a sweater close to your front entrance. If you’re a bit more fashion forward, an infinity scarf or pashmina is an excellent option to keep you warm while also looking good.
  • Keep your toes warm with a pair of slippers or flats for wear around the house.

On cooler nights, try preparing comfort food and drinks:

  • Get baking and make a simple recipe like kale chips – or just bake a frozen pizza. What’s important is that the warmth of the oven will lend some heat to your apartment.
  • Nothing warms you from the inside like a good cuppa tea, so put the kettle on and get cozy.

When the weather warms up:

  • Wear breezy and loose fitting clothing, lounge pants, tanks, t-shirts and indoor flip flops.
  • Take a quick cold shower before bed to cool your core temperature.
  • Dim or turn off the lights around your apartment.
  • Keep a spray bottle handy to spritz yourself for a quick cool-down.
  • Prepare a spicy recipe or go heavy on the sriracha sauce; spicy food causes you to sweat and cool.
  • Invest in a good fan to circulate the air in your apartment
  • Keep lots of water chilled in the fridge No need for wasteful plastic bottles, pick-up a few glass bottles with stoppers. Add mint leaves, citrus and cucumber to the water for a flavour burst along with the cooling effect.
