How to keep pets cool in the summer

Share:

Summer's here and it's really hot in Canada. Perhaps your pet's panting has tipped you off already -- they're too hot! In an effort to help you keep them comfortable this season, here are our best tips for keeping your pets as cool as a cucumber this summer.

Water!

Your pet wants to stay hydrated in the summer so do what you can to keep them well watered. Staying hydrated helps them cool off fast. This includes putting out large containers of cool water for them to slurp around your apartment and occasionally bathing them in cool water and letting them splash around in a clean body of water if they want to take a dip while out on a walk.

Time your walks

As you've probably noticed, certain times of the day are way hotter than others in the summer months. Try to refrain from walking your dog at peak heat times like midday. Instead, walk your pet in the early morning and evening when temperatures are less scorching. Their tender paws will appreciate the consideration!

Leave them at home when you shop

Never leave your pet alone in your car on a hot day. It's cruel! Heat magnifies in the enclosed space leaving them stressed and overheated. If you know you need to shop, leave your pet at home instead of taking them along for the ride.

Sunscreen!

Just like you, your pet can get a sunburn. Pick up some pet sunscreen for them to help them avoid getting burned on a hot and sunny day. They'll feel much cooler for it!

Leave the AC on

If you're going to be out all day, it can be tempting to switch off the AC while you're gone. If your pet is stuck at home this can be torture. They can get very overheated quite quickly so be kind and leave the AC on for them on scorching days.

We hope you give these tips for keeping your pet cool a try! They'll really appreciate it.
