How to make the most of the Bow River this summer

Share:

Alberta’s Bow River flows right through downtown Calgary. The river provides a life-sustaining water source to millions of people and land throughout the province. It is also a hub of recreational activity including fishing, hiking, rafting and bird watching. Hazelview’s Calgary communities are conveniently located near the Bow River, close to great recreational facilities and activities.

Fishing
The Bow River is one of Canada’s premier fishing destinations and one of the top three trout streams in the world. The fishing season typically goes from March to November, with most of the fishing activity taking place in May until the end of September. The Bow River is a pristine and practically untouched fishery with clear and cold fast-moving water. It is a breathtaking place to walk, boat and even wade for Bull, Brown, Rainbow and Cutthroat varieties of Trout. For more information on Fishing in the Bow River check out the Alberta Fishing Guide for fishing regulations, zones, location maps, weather reports and more.

Rafting
The Bow River is also one of the preeminent rivers of Western Canada for both whitewater rafting and kayaking. The section of the Bow River above Banff is also a popular spot for canoeing and flat-water kayakers in case big waves and rapids aren’t for you. The rafting season on the Bow River runs from May until September, with optimal rafting times in the late spring/early summer. For safety tips and general information on rafting in the Bow River, check out the Calgary Outdoor Centre’s guide on Rafting 101.

The Bow River Pathway
The Bow River Pathway is a trail system developed along the banks of the river in Calgary. The pathway consists of both pedestrian and bicycle paths that connect to parks on both sides of the river. Common uses of the Bow River Pathway include cycling, hiking, jogging, rollerblading and skateboarding. The Pathway is only a 15-minute drive from Hazelview’s Calgary communities. The trail is almost completely flat making it perfect for small kids and young children learning to bike for the first time. The Calgary Zoo is also connected to the path and only a ten-minute bicycle ride from our 1010 First Street South West community.

Wildlife Watching
The Bow River and surrounding area is home to a wide range of animal wildlife. There are over 50 species of mammals in the area including porcupine, elk, deer, coyotes, rabbits, bears, beavers and more. The river is also a popular bird watching spot with over 260 species of birds within the region. Bird species to look out for include Pygmy Owls, Cassin’s Finches, Mountain Chickadees, Bald Eagles, Harlequin Ducks and more. Enjoy downtown Calgary living while still being immersed in the sights, sounds and smells of nature.
