Staying Safe On and Off Campus

Share:

‘Safety first’ is always a good mantra -- from the time you enter first grade to the first time you set foot in university. In today’s post we have given you a few easy yet effective ways to stay safe on and off campus.

Keep Your Friends Close

Staying safe is easier and more fun with a friend at your side. When walking across campus or exploring off-campus, especially at night, ask a roommate or classmate to join you. If no one is available, check if your university has a service like the WalkSafe program at Ryerson University (350 Victoria Street) in Toronto, which offers students and faculty a free uniformed escort at any time, any day of the week. Ryerson University is a 10-minute walk from Sherwood Apartments (392 Sherbourne Street).

Take a self-defense class

The University of Ottawa (75 Laurier Avenue East), located just a 10-minute walk from York Towers (135-145 York Street), offers regular self-defense classes that are free for students. The course typically runs on a Friday and Saturday, for a total of 12 hours. Participants learn basic skills and strategies for safety that can be implemented in daily routines, like walking to and from your apartment. Check your university or local fitness or community centre for similar classes.

Download an app

Put technology to use as another way to stay safe, on and off campus. Apps for your smartphone, such as bSafe, can alert selected friends and family if you fail to check-in on time after your evening dinner party or early-morning run. Other features of bSafe include the ability to share your location, set timers and program fake calls.

Plan ahead

Not all scary situations can be avoided by planning ahead; however, if there’s a chance that careful planning could prevent an unwanted circumstance, why not give it a try? Waterloo’s Wilfrid Laurier University (75 University Avenue West), less than a 20-minute walk from Avenue Apartments (137 University Avenue West), offers an easy-to-use toolkit for planning to attend or host an off-campus activity or events.
