Tips for working from home when you have a dog

Share:

The dog days of summer may have a different meaning this year. With more of us working from home, our dogs are having a great time getting lots of extra attention. There are many benefits to having a dog, but increased productivity may not be one of them. Here are some tips for working from home when you have a dog.

Walk first, work after

Starting your day with a walk is a great way to prevent whining, whimpering and attention-seeking. Walking your dog is good for both of you and establishing this routine will make the bond between you and your best friend even stronger. A well-walked dog is more content to lounge around while you get some work done.

Schedule time for play

In addition to walks, your dog needs to play. Rather than get distracted by constant requests for playtime, it may be more efficient to schedule a 20 to 30-minute block of playtime to tire your pup out and put them in a great mood.

Keep your dog busy while you are

Dogs aren't great at respecting conference call etiquette. To help prevent disruptions in your Zoom meetings, it's important to keep your dog as busy as you are. Try engaging them with a fun and challenging puzzle toy, or keep them tongue-tied with a refreshing frozen doggy treat.

Designated space

We've written about the importance of creating a designated space in your home for you to work in -- but what about your dog? They may need their own space as well. Their space should help them feel safe and secure, rather than punished. Give them some toys or treats so they can relax and enjoy themselves while you are otherwise engaged.

Stay strong

It's important not to give in to your dog's demands for attention. If they know you will react every time they do something cute, you're not going to get anything done. If they act out in order to get your attention, you don't want to reward bad behaviour. Learn to prevent attention-seeking behaviour before it becomes a pattern.

We hope these tips for working from home with a dog help to strengthen your bond while increasing your productivity.
