Warm Elixirs to Boost Your Health This Winter

Stay happy and healthy through winter in Burlington this year with the following warm nourishing elixirs. These drinks are full of anti-oxidants, immune boosting ingredients, and offer a variety of other important health and nutrition benefits.

Cold and Flu Elixir
To get through our cold Canadian winter weather, try this cold and flu elixir to keep sickness at bay. This drink is perfect for relieving a sore throat, stuffed nose, and can even help to boost energy levels.  The ingredients in this drink offer antiseptic, antibiotic, hydrating, and vitamin boosting properties. Simply blend all of the following ingredients and add to hot water (or tea). Fortinos grocery store (1059 Plains Road East) is located less than a 10-minute walk away from our 955 Warwick Court apartments, and has everything you will need to make the cold and flu elixir.  Ingredients

  • ¼ cup raw honey
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric

Hot Chocolate Super-food Elixir
This delicious yet healthy drink features intense spices, healthy cacao powder, and health-boosting super foods all wrapped up into one cozy drink. This elixir is rich in vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, and more. The raw cacao is high in magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, and potassium. The ginger aids in digestion, lowers blood pressure, and aids in circulation. The Maca powder stabilizes the body’s hormonal and cardiovascular systems, as well as stabilizing moods and boosting energy. The full recipe is available here.

Ingredients (for 2 people):

  • 4 tbsp. raw cacao powder
  • 4 tsp. Maca powder
  • 2 tbsp. raw honey
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon powder (or 1 fresh cinnamon stick)
  • Dash of cayenne pepper
  • Dash of ginger powder
  • 3 cups almond, hemp, or coconut milk

Simon’s Most Nourishing Elixir
This final elixir features immune boosting ingredients such as ginger, lemons, cinnamon, saffron, cardamom pods, and more. This recipe takes a bit longer to prepare (40 minutes), but it can be kept in the fridge and re-heated as needed. Longos grocery store (1225 Fairview Street) is located less than a five-minute drive away from our 955 Warwick Court apartments, and has a specialty health section for your nourishing elixir ingredients. Ingredients (makes 8 cups worth):

  • 8 cups water
  • One 1-inch piece of ginger
  • Finely grated zest of 2 lemons (or substitute oranges if preferred)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (or cinnamon powder)
  • 5 green cardamom pods
  • 4 allspice berries
  • 2 whole cloves
  • Pinch of saffron
  • 2 tablespoons honey
